We can think that it is the same discipline, but Grappling is more assimilated to competitions with grades of colors and different categories of weight and ages which differ according to certain federations which have their own regulations.

You can be a Grappler at one time for the preparation of a competition and the rest of the time training in NoGi, one does not prevent the other.

We have set up this page to bring our vision of the 2 activities which in our eyes are almost similar on certain points, but which have gradually evolved to be perceived as identical, namely a gripping sport which consists of carrying his opponent on the ground, take control, submit or simply learn the logic of positions like a game of chess that we could call "Rolling".

We can find several qualities in Grappling and NoGi which are innovative sports, even if these activities are little known, they become more so over time, gripping sports began during the ancient era, the "Jogo No Chao "Ground fighting was practiced by many top athletes in order to perfect their fighting arts with other practices.

The NoGi

What does No-Gi mean?

NoGi means without kimono, this practice, to drop the jacket comes from Judo or BJJ where it was common after training or on certain Opens Mat to remove it, to turn with other practitioners of combat sports ( Wrestling, Luta Livre, etc.).

By shooting without a kimono, there is equity in terms of outfits, everyone comes with their background to measure themselves against another fighting style.

Initially, less codified, NoGi brought more freedom than Grappling.

In NoGi, the objective is to perform his techniques to bring to the ground, learn to have good controls even without having a "gripp" to finalize his opponent using a submission technique, the fight at the training can start on the knees, on the buttocks, the back or standing with all the control position work to get to finalize his opponent in the allotted time.

A name that is now increasingly used by Jiu-Jiteiros who drop the kimono in training or who want to participate in NoGi competitions which are becoming more and more organized.

The Grappling

What is Grappling?

Generally, Grappling is a broader term than NoGi, as it encompasses all practitioners of the various gripping sports without a kimono, but within the framework of a competition.

It is for us a combat sport in its own right, the structured competitions which are organized by level of experience, age category and weight with a whole set of rules which allows to define the scoring of points during the fight.

There is even at the end of each competition, a Ranking according to the results of each participant.

You should know that in competition, you start standing with a color code (blue and red) but in training, you can start on the ground on your buttocks or even on your knees.

Today, it has become easier to explain that we practice Grappling than NoGi, because it is a name much more widespread even among neophytes and which is more exploited by search engines because of social networks, on which the word “Grappling” stands out much more.

Which Rashguard to wear for Grappling and No-Gi?

Rashguards with long or short sleeves are the tops best suited to the practice of NoGi or Grappling.

They are made of Polyester/Spandex, a compressive and stretchy material which has several advantages for the practice of combat sports, it adapts perfectly to the morphology without limiting movements to allow easy switching from a wrestling phase to Grappling while preserving the skin from burns during ground combat.

Some practitioners will favor a short-sleeved lycra in summer and a long-sleeved compression T-shirt for winter.

One of the great advantages of the Rashguard is also that it is more hygienic and that it offers a temporary barrier against all the dirt and microbes that are present on the tatami mats.

Regarding cotton T-shirts or Dry Shirts, they can offer a certain comfort, because they are looser than a Rashguard, but they present more risk for sports practice.

Shorts or Leggings for NoGi Grappling?

The NoGi or Grappling shorts called "Fight shorts" remain the most popular product for men, they are timeless and timeless.

The leggings are struggling, but are gradually arriving in men unlike women who are very popular with them, they can be worn in winter as in summer and they have the same advantages as the Rashguard, namely a compressive material and stretchable that does not limit movement and protects the skin from burns.

Compression shorts are an alternative to leggings when temperatures rise in summer, as they will keep the upper legs warm during rest periods.

Evolution and its competitions

History-of-the-outfit-Boa-Fightwear

What is the origin of the Grappling outfit?

At the very beginning, the first combat shorts "Fight Shorts" all had a scratch which made the belt rigid, to compensate for this rigidity of the fabric, a piece of elastane was added in the crotch, the fact of having an elastic waistband gave a look of classic sports shorts and not a look of combat shorts, an identity problem arose to legitimize this sport, soccer players had their own shorts, tennis players too, we also had to find an alternative for the fighters.

It took about 15 years to gain acceptance for this elastic belt, which offers more advantages for sports practice.

The Rashguard quickly became part of the Nogi/Grappling outfit.

Initially, it had to be very resistant and thick, so much less elastic, from our memories of practitioners from the first hour, they stank quickly, trapping odors and bacteria.

Today, we prefer them thinner which makes them less rigid for better mobility of movement.

What outfit for the Grappling competition?

To date, the proper attire is a rashguard in the color of the rank and plain black shorts.

Our Preference and advice

If you are a "Guardeiro" and you work more on your back and elbows, we advise you to choose a long-sleeved Rashguard to avoid permanent contact with the carpets to protect you from burns and dirt from the tatami mats.

The leggings have the same advantages as a Rashguard, they are ideal for the "Passador", those who work on the passages of guard to return in half or completely pass the guard.

The shorts can be multi-disciplinary: MMA, Boxing, Kick Boxing, Grappling/Nogi.

As it is a sport where there is a lot of combat phase with less intensity to analyze the technique of your opponent, gradually work on your strategy, so to avoid getting cold we recommend compression equipment which has several advantages for the practice of combat sports, they adapt perfectly to your morphology without limiting your movements to allow you to switch easily from a wrestling phase to Grappling while preserving your skin from burns during ground fights.

The NoGi is my source of practice, wherever I trained there was always a possibility to learn about this activity, as it was new, we had no official outfits and there were no rules, only the code of the sportsman. I would say that this word corresponds to me + than Grappling.
